Dr. Njwen Anyangwe, Ph.D.
Dr. Njwen Anyangwe is an Interdisciplinary Scientist with diverse scientific background in Regulatory Toxicology, Biochemistry, Nutrition, Molecular Biology, and Cancer Biology. She has expertise in the safety assessment of food and dietary ingredients, based on reviews of all toxicology data, including observations in animal models and humans.
Dr. Anyangwe holds a Ph.D. in Nutrition and Food Science with an emphasis in Cancer Biology. She holds an M.S degree in Medical Biochemistry and a B.S. degree in Biochemistry (First Class Honors). Her post-doctoral research focused on signaling pathways in colorectal cancer, specifically, the effect of strain and pressure on colon cancer cell adhesion, migration, and progression. Her doctoral work focused on the role of the tumor suppressor gene p53 in Base Excision Repair Pathway. Her M.S. thesis investigated the efficacy of Scoparia dulcis and Catharanthus roseus in the management of Diabetes Mellitus, and her B.S. thesis investigated the efficacy of different brands of Chloroquine on Malaria parasite.
Dr. Anyangwe has over 13 years of university teaching experience. She has taught Biochemistry at the University of Buea, Cameroon; Organic Chemistry and Biology at Madonna University, Livonia, Michigan; Food Science, and Nutrition and Health courses at Wayne State University (WSU), Detroit, Michigan.
Dr. Anyangwe has been a recipient of several awards, including Best Graduating Female student, Best Faculty of Science student, Best Biochemistry student, Dr. Omogbai’s memorial prize for Best Biochemistry Student, and University of Port Harcourt Women’s prize for Best Graduating Female student at the University of Port Harcourt, Nigeria. In addition, she was awarded Thomas Rumble Fellowship, Arthur J. Walker Memorial Annual Scholarship, Parent Family Endowed Scholarship, Graduate Student Travel Awards, and Department of Nutrition and Food Science Scholarships at WSU. She was inducted into the Phi Beta Delta Honors Society for International Scholars at WSU. She was a Biotechnology Institute Minority Fellow in 2007.
She is a member of several professional organizations including the African Society for Toxicological Sciences, the American Society for Nutrition, the Association for Women in Science, the Food and Drug Law Institute, Genetic Toxicology Association, and the Society of Toxicology.
She has developed presentations and presented to several scientific and non-scientific audiences. She has been keynote speaker, moderator or panelist at several health, science, and career conferences.
She is a Certified Health Promotion Instructor (volunteer) with the American Cancer Society (ACS). She is passionate about chronic disease prevention, with a specific interest in cancer prevention, with a focus on early detection, and diet and lifestyle modifications, as essential steps towards reducing the burden of cancer. She is also passionate about career development and the empowerment of the girl child.
